The Traveling Engine Service Technician is responsible for performing top-end and major/in-frame overhauls of Caterpillar marine diesel propulsion and generator engines at offsite installations of the Company's marine, industrial, and petroleum customers. Assignments range from several days to several weeks at a time and involve extensive overnight travel (80% of the time) to domestic, offshore, and international locations.
- Disassemble, adjust, install, and repair, in conjunction with both top end and major/in-frame overhauls, reciprocating engine-based marine, industrial, and petroleum power systems in accordance with all prescribed quality and safety standards.
- Troubleshoot, problem-solve, and identify the problem through failure analysis.
- Test, measure, align and adjust engine systems and components.
- Research and determine re-usability of parts in accordance with published manufacturer guidelines.
- Coordinate the ordering of replacement parts with supervisor.
- Prepare and submit detailed, complete, and legible service reports of all inspection and repairs performed using prescribed forms and procedures in a timely manner.
- Keep supervisor regularly apprised of status of assigned repair jobs and assist in addressing customer questions and concerns.
- Maintain a professional and proper personal appearance at all times.
- Keep up to date with developments in tooling, technologies, and systems.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Diesel engine, construction equipment and/or truck engine training and certifications through accredited technical schools or relevant military experience preferred.
- Minimum 4 to 6 years previous hands-on work experience as a diesel technician repairing Caterpillar or competitor diesel and spark ignited engines, and diesel/electric systems related components. Related technician experience in a field service setting preferred.
- Dedicated experience troubleshooting and performing top end and major overhauls on CAT engine models including 3208, 3126, 3300, 300 series, 3400, 3500, 3600, C280.
- Ability to read and comprehend moderately difficult computer-based schematics, specifications, service and parts literature, technical bulletins, safety manuals, and other related publications.
- Solid mechanical systems knowledge of diesel engines/engine failures and electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Proficient in the use of mechanical test equipment including CAT ET.
- Ability to safely use equipment and tooling and wear company required PPE (protective eyewear, gloves, harnesses, footwear) during a shift assignment that could last between 12 and 15 hours in hot and confined spaces.

- Good computer skills using related information system applications (ex: SIS, DBS).
- Ability to perform duties with a sense of urgency, exceeding customer expectations.
- Ability to work independently in a dynamic fast paced field service environment.
- Possess a complete set of basic mechanic hand tools including drives, sockets, and wrenches.
- Be able to obtain and maintain a passport and visa for international travel.
- Have and maintain a current driver's license and maintain a driving record (MVR) which adheres to the company's motor vehicle policy standards.
- This position involves significant amounts of travel with scheduled time off.
