In the trucking industry, the race is in full blast to see which trucking companies will be the first to go electric. One of the latest entries into the contest is the Freightliner eCascadia, which is an all-electric heavy-duty Class 8 truck. Find out more about how far this Freightliner has come since then, and how this partnership will NFI is expected to go.
Fully Electric Freightliner
Daimler Trucks North America has actually revealed two new fully electric trucks. These include the eCascadia, which is the Class 8 truck that NFI will be operating. There is also the Freightliner eM2 106 medium-duty truck. This truck will be used for regional loads and local hauls. As for NFI’s role in their partnership with DTNA, NFI will be using 10 of the eCascadias to handle port drayage in California. NFI is a leader in drayage with more than 4,000 tractors and 8,700 trailers as part of its drayage fleet. If this takes off with the all-electric eCascadia, it could be a game changer if NFI pursues to switch over the rest of its multi-thousand truck fleet.
Sustainability Matters at NFI
A big reason why the Freightliner eCascadia was selected by NFI is to provide greater environmental sustainability. Being able to help the environment while getting the power of one of the best branded big rigs on the road is a huge win for NFI. Sid Brown, serving as CEO at NFI, added, “Social responsibility is a core value at NFI, and our collaboration with DTNA exhibits our shared commitment to innovation and sustainability. NFI strives to continually invest in new, innovative technology that can help improve the impact that NFI and its customers have on the environment. We look forward to further partnering and supporting the California ports and their efforts to improve sustainability and create a cleaner community.”
These new trucks are only one aspect of the sustainability efforts at NFI. The trucking company in New Jersey is also using APUs that are battery-powered to help reduce idling time among its driving fleet. NFI is also a SmartWay Partner, which has enabled the trucking company to pick up some of the newest technologies in the environmental sector.
The SmartWay partnership with the EPA puts NFI at the front of the line when the latest fuel-efficient technology is released for use. In fact, since NFI has become a SmartWay partner, the company has been recognized as a SmartWay High Performer. NFI is also pushing forward with an investment in zero-emission trucks, which will be implemented into the fleet by 2019.
