Hazmat (short for hazardous materials) truck driving can involve driving a wide variety of trucks, depending on the type of material being transported. The type of truck that is used for the job will dictate the type of CDL required. In addition, the U.S. Department of Transportation mandates that all drivers that transport hazardous materials must receive additional training in proper loading and unloading, accompanying paperwork and accident management. Truck drivers are usually asked to make sure that all hazmat regulations are maintained, as well as ensure that the container is in good condition and properly labeled. Some companies receive paid training as well as a pay increase for being hazmat certified.
