Truck expediters are handling extremely time-sensitive freight, also referred to as “plant shut-down” or “red-hot” freight. There are a wide variety of industries that utilize this service, and the products transported can be almost anything. However, this is an extremely demanding job as there are generally no breaks granted between the pick-up and drop-off point, and calls come in 24/7. There also tends to be a more significant wait time, as this is more of an emergency nature type of trucking and not conducive to regular scheduling. A newer segment of the expediter market is the high value transporting of luxury goods and costly items. Expediters are almost always owner operators, and may lease trucks from individual fleets that can range from 20 to over 1,000 custom carriers. In this case, the leasing carrier will often provide cargo and primary liability insurance.
