A diesel mechanic is an engine technician that is qualified to work on a variety of diesel powered motors including cars, trucks, vans and buses. The job of a diesel mechanic has evolved dramatically in the past decade with the emergence of more electronic components within diesel engines. This has encouraged, and in many cases required, diesel mechanics to acquire additional training.
While some mechanics receive their training while working on-the-job, employers increasingly prefer those who go through a formal education process. This usually comes in the form of a two-year community, trade or vocational school program.
