Averitt Express Recipient of SMC3 Alliance Award Averitt Express Recipient of SMC3 Alliance Award
Averitt Express Recipient of SMC3 Alliance Award

March 7th, 2017

For trucking companies interested in going the extra mile, there can be a pot of gold at the end of the road. That’s what Averitt Express has discovered after partnering with two other companies to improve supply chain costs. Working with customers is a major aspect of any carrier’s position. However, by saving the customers money, and in the case of Averitt environmental expenses, it is a winning situation all around. Of course this isn’t Averitt’s first time as the hero in such a scenario.

Averitt Express Four Time Recipient

For the fourth consecutive year Averitt has been awarded the Alliance Award. This award is given by the trucking industry trade association SMC3 and trade publication Logistics Management. Averitt Express president and COO Wayne Spain said, “We’re very humbled to have been recognized with the Alliance Award for the fourth straight year. Working with SalonCentric has allowed us to explore new supply chain strategies that allow us to minimize our environmental footprint while also reducing costs. It’s proof that a forward-thinking partnership can lead to great results.” Saving money for trucking companies and their customers, while also benefiting the environment is a complete success in the freight business.

What It Takes to Win

SMC3 and Logistics Management chose Averitt Express and associates PITT OHIO and SalonCentric for this award due to the trio’s commitment to supply chain efficiency. SalonCentric is a wholesale beauty supply and salon distributor, as well as one of the largest distributors in North America. Averitt provides carrier services for SalonCentric. In order to reduce its carbon footprint and amount of waste with shipments, SalonCentric has moved from using corrugated cardboard to contain shipments. Instead the organization now uses reusable plastic totes. In order to make this change happen with the shipping side of things, SalonCentric and Averitt teamed up with PITT OHIO.

PITT OHIO is a service organization optimizing less than truckload freight, as well as supply chain solutions. They are based in Pittsburgh and provide services throughout the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic. PITT OHIO worked with Averitt Express and SalonCentric to organize a supply chain process that allows Averitt truck drivers to pick up empty plastic totes during their deliveries. These are transferred to a consolidation point to be reused rather than disposed of at every delivery.

SalonCentric director of operations Eric Reddish notes, “As a result of our tote return program, SalonCentric has been able to keep 325 tons of corrugate out of landfills and recycling facilities across the country annually, which has really been a huge win in helping us accomplish our environmental goals.” By cutting out the use of corrugate this has done more than just keep tons of cardboard out of local landfills. It has also cut out $40,000 a year in expenses of corrugated cardboard use and disposal.

Working as a team PITT OHIO and Averitt Express developed a strategy for distribution that also reduced delivery time. This increased the amount of ordering for customers by seven hours. As a result customers can place more orders more often, thereby increasing the amount of freight able to move with each load. This time savings maneuver is saving SalonCentric even more money at $50,000 a year in freight costs.

Meet SMC3

SMC3 is a leader in LTL freight optimization, working with more than 5,000 trucking companies, customers and logistics service providers. Through the development of new transportation and logistics tools, SMC3 remains at the forefront of supply chain innovation. This year the association is celebrating 80 years in the logistics business. Keeping with the times the association is more than just a supply chain company. SMC3 is a knowledge leader, providing thought-leader sessions via the Logistics Technology Summit, Connections convention, and three-day annual supply chain event called Jump Start.
